Our Heritage

Hong Kong's first Korean restaurant

Arirang opened in 1964 as Hong Kong's first Korean restaurant. In 1983, we brought Hong Kong its first smokeless barbecue tables. The city has never looked back.

Today, at Winland Square in Wanchai, the room reflects everything we have learned: time-honoured authentic Korean recipes, traditional Korean aesthetics, and a warmth that has always been at the heart of what we do.

"Korean dining follows two great traditions. HahnJungShik: the formal banquet - generous, celebratory, arriving in waves of side dishes. And the specialty house: disciplined, focused, devoted to a single craft. Arirang sits between them."

Over sixty years, we have developed our own way of presenting Korean cuisine: the generosity and range of a HahnJungShik table, alongside the depth and precision of Korea's great specialty traditions. The result is a menu of over two hundred dishes - where every visit is a different journey, and no two meals need ever be the same.

The Name

Wherever Koreans have gone, Arirang has followed. Korea's most beloved folk song, it exists in as many versions as there are regions - some bright, some playful - yet it is the lament, a song of longing and endurance, that has travelled furthest and lasted longest. Found in Korean communities as far as China and Russia, its words carry the weight of home remembered and hardship endured.

We named our restaurant after this song. A piece of Korea that travels, that endures, and that always finds its way home.

"I've probably had a better Korean meal at Arirang than during my visit to Seoul, with every dish bursting with flavour."
This family-run eatery has been in Hong Kong for over 60 years. Must-order vegetarian dishes: kimchi and spring onion pancakes, bibimbap, japchae, pan-fried spicy tofu, and cold spicy buckwheat noodles. Insider tip: ask for extra banchan - the sesame spinach and sweet potato are unmissable.

I went there because I was really craving Korean food before returning home, and the kimchi stew was even tastier than the ones I used to eat back in Korea. It felt just like my mom's home cooking. The Korean owner was also very kind, and thanks to them, I feel properly nourished before returning home.

While travelling, I was growing tired of the same old dishes, and this place brought back memories of my hometown. I was delighted by the cosy atmosphere, and most of all, I was amazed by the diverse menu - bibimbap, BBQ, pajeon, jeongol, bossam, bibim pho, and my favourite green bottled soju. The side dishes were exquisite. The staff were incredibly friendly. Living up to the name of a family-run restaurant in Hong Kong, I felt the cost was well-deserved. I recommend this place when you are craving the food and flavours of home while far away.

Hong Kong's first Korean restaurant, open since 1964, still going strong after all these years. As a regular customer of over 20 years, I can confirm it's the perfect spot for a quick lunch or a proper Korean BBQ dinner. The lunch sets are exceptional value, the stone pot soups are warming and comforting, and the tteokbokki is hands down the best in Hong Kong - spicy but not overwhelming, served piping hot in a sizzling pan, packed with chewy rice cakes. The BBQ is great, and they will grill it for you in the kitchen during lunch hours. At dinner, the marinated short ribs are on another level - incredibly juicy. Highly recommended.

10 out of 10. We've been going regularly for nearly 15 years, and neither the quality nor the staff have changed. We love the place, we love the people.

A few days ago I returned from Korea and visited with friends in Hong Kong. It was a day when I realised how much better Arirang was in many ways than the restaurants I had visited in Korea. I am so grateful for Arirang's ability to maintain the refined flavours of Korean cuisine, uncontaminated by excessive seasonings or sweeteners. The staff were kind enough to help with storage and plating when I brought a cake for a birthday. Thanks to the hospitality of the Korean manager and the warm care of the Hong Kong staff, I had a truly wonderful day. I am so glad to have a place I can go to without hesitation.
